A Closer Look at Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease
Gastroesophageal is a medical term referring to the stomach as well as the esophagus. Reflux refers to flowing back or returning. With that in mind, GERD refers to the contents of the stomach returning or flowing back into the esophagus. Normally, the lower esophageal sphincter or LES closes and keeps the stomach’s contents inside but there are cases where it opens inappropriately and the contents may shoot back up, causing a burning sensation, coughing, and others. It is actually a very common disease and it is a precursor to other gastroesophageal concerns. Continue reading
Dizziness Vertigo and Meniere’s Disease – Differences and Treatment
Dizziness is a very broad term that has no specific medical definition. Many times people complain of dizziness but are in fact referring to different types of symptoms that are often chalked up as “dizziness”. Some examples are vertigo, light-headedness, and Meniere’s Disease.
To better define dizziness the symptoms and types have to be defined as well. Since dizziness is only felt and observed by the patient, ENT doctors find it very hard to take note of and treat. Only the patient may tell how severe the pain is and how it feels. Continue reading
Tumors of the Middle Ear & Mastoid Portion
Just like any other part of the body, the ears are also subject to the growth of benign and malignant tumors. Tumors may grow in all areas of the ear – from the exterior to the middle ear and inner ear. As tumors in each location are different in behavior and treatment, they have to be categorized by site of occurrence. This regards the tumors of the middle ear and to some extent, the mastoid portion. Continue reading
Medical Tests Used to Diagnose Laryngeal Cancer
Most people who experience symptoms like hoarseness in their voice or chronic sore throat would seek an appointment with an ENT specialist to check if they are suffering from a deadly disease known as laryngeal cancer.
The larynx is the medical term for the voice box, which can be found in the neck right above the windpipe’s opening. This cancer is often found due to symptoms or signs that a person experiences and if your ENT doctor suspects you may have it, then he will order some tests to confirm the diagnosis.
The following are the most widely used tests to confirm the presence of laryngeal cancer: Continue reading
Head and Neck Cancer Screening Paired with Lung Cancer Screening – Higher Detection and Survival Rates
Extensive scanning is required to detect cancer early and early detection is one of the vital keys to treating cancer before it complicates and reaches metastasis. A new team and scientists who are affiliated to the UCPI (University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute) state that early detection of head and neck cancer could prevail if head and neck screening is conducted simultaneously with lung screening. What are Head and Neck Tumors?
Head and neck tumors refer to both benign and malignant tissue growth along the head and neck. Thyroid gland tumors and cancers of the muscles and bones of the head and neck are sometimes included in this list as well.
Causes of Head and Neck Tumors
The body’s cells divide to give birth to new cells. They function for a while and then die. Some cells do not die and simply continue to spread and will form a lump of tissue, disrupting the function of the body’s organs, particularly where the tumor is growing. Continue reading
Everything About Throat Cancer – Symptoms, Types and Treatment
Throat cancer is a broad term that refers to all types of cancer occurring in the throat or pharynx, voice box or larynx, and the tonsils. Throat cancer may also affect the epiglottis, the flap of tissue sitting atop the larynx and functions to prevent food and liquids from entering the trachea. Throat cancer also affects the tonsils. Continue reading
Everything About Nasopharyngeal Cancer – Symptoms and Treatment
The nasopharynx is the very beginning portion of the throat and is located right behind the nose. Nasopharyngeal cancer is one of the rarest forms of head and neck cancer and is also referred to as nasopharyngeal carcinoma or NPC.
To this date there is no direct reason why or how nasopharyngeal cancer occurs but scientists have linked its occurrence with the Epstein-Barr Virus or EBV. Just about everyone is infected with EBV but normally the immune systems help deal with this. It is when the infection gets out of control that scientists suspect nasopharyngeal cancer to arise. It is more prominent in males younger than 55 and is a higher risk for people who constantly consume alcohol and tobacco. Continue reading
